Moving to a new home is never easy and, if you are in the military, you may be required to move many times in the course of your career. The upheaval of packing up and saying goodbye to your old neighborhood can be stressful, even if you are also excited about the adventure that awaits you when you move to a new location. The cost of moving can be a cause of additional stress, although, if you are in the military, the government will usually be able to shoulder some of the difficulties of moving by arranging your move for you and paying for it. Even so, some people decide to do a do it yourself move, often called a military DITY move, instead of using the military mover.
There are various reasons why someone may choose to do a military DITY move. For example, your household goods may be above your authorized weight limit or you simply want full control over how your goods will be packed and transported. Various members of your family may even need to move at different times or from different locations, which could make a military DITY move the most practical option.
One commonly cited reason is that it is possible to make money by doing a military DITY move. This is because the money which you receive as reimbursement for the move may be more than the amount that it costs you to arrange your own packing and transportation, so, in a sense, you are being paid to take on the move yourself. However, keep in mind that a full military dity move may entail a considerable amount of work and it may or may not be worth the money you make. It is also possible to do a partial military DITY move. Because a partial move allows you to take on only as much of the move as you wish, this may be the most suitable option for your circumstances.
